ANGELO DUNDEE’S PERSONAL BOXING MEMORABILIA, INCLUDING MUHAMMAD ALI’S GLOVES FROM 1964 LISTON FIGHT AND “THE FIGHT OF THE CENTURY,” FEATURED IN SCP AUCTIONS’ NOVEMBER 2012 AUCTION

Laguna Niguel, Calif.  (July 30, 2012) – SCP Auctions is proud to announce The Angelo Dundee Estate Collection of boxing memorabilia for its November 2012 online auction. In a Hall of Fame career in professional boxing that began in 1952, Angelo Dundee gained acclaim as a brilliant cornerman, whether healing cuts, inspiring his fighters to battle on when they seemed to be reeling, or adjusting strategy between rounds to counter an opponent’s style. The renowned trainer was a guiding force to the two most celebrated fighters of his era, Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard, and 15 other world champions.

The collection features hundreds of items spanning the breadth of Dundee’s extraordinary career and includes some of the most historically important Muhammad Ali memorabilia ever offered to the public. Among the collection highlights are several significant pairs of Muhammad Ali fight-worn gloves including Ali’s (then Cassius Clay) gloves from his February 25, 1964 bout against Sonny Liston and his gloves from his March 8, 1971 bout against Joe Frazier (Ali-Frazier I). These two pairs of gloves represent Ali’s two most legendary fights and have been dubbed by SCP Auctions officials as “the most valuable and historically significant boxing artifacts in the world.”

“These gloves represent boxing’s crown jewels,” said Dan Imler, SCP Auctions managing director, “and rank among the most significant sports memorabilia artifacts ever offered publicly. Muhammad Ali is a cultural icon beloved throughout the world. These are the ultimate tools of Ali’s trade from his most legendary bouts, used by him to forge his undisputed status as ‘The Greatest of All Time’.”

Clay’s 1964 bout with Liston was among the most anticipated, watched and controversial fights in sports history. The brash 22-year-old Clay entered the fight as a seven-to-one underdog against the seemingly unstoppable Liston. Clay’s improbable sixth-round TKO brought him his first heavyweight title. His jubilant and defiant celebration whereby Clay repeatedly taunts ringside detractors with his famous proclamations "I am the greatest!" and "I shook up the world!" has been rebroadcast countless times during the ensuing decades.

Seven years later, Muhammad Ali met Joe Frazier in the first of a trilogy of battles that may be the best series of contests between two combatants in the history of boxing. Ali, then 31-0, had been stripped of his heavyweight titles when, as Cassius Clay, he refused to be inducted into the military after being drafted for the Vietnam War. Frazier, at 26-0, had captured the title of undisputed heavyweight champion in 1970 with a technical knockout of Jimmy Ellis. Billed as “The Fight of The Century,” it was a brutal 15-round battle that ended with a decision in favor of Frazier. The epic struggle is considered by many as the greatest boxing match of all time. It was a practice of Dundee’s to mark Ali’s fight gloves with identifying notations on the interior either just prior to or after each fight to record their provenance. His period notations and signature appear inside each glove.

Jim Dundee, the late Angelo’s son, plans to donate a portion of the proceeds from the November 2012 sale to the Muhammad Ali Foundation.

“Through the sale of this collection, I look forward to fulfilling my father’s wish that necessary medical care be provided and funded for my sister, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis,” said Dundee.

Other significant artifacts from The Angelo Dundee Estate Collection of Boxing Memorabilia include the following:

•           Cassius Clay’s fight-worn gloves from 1962 bout vs. Johnny Logan

•           Muhammad Ali’s fight-worn gloves from 1966 bout vs. George Chuvalo

•           Muhammad Ali’s fight-worn gloves from 1970 bout vs. Oscar Bonavena

•           Muhammad Ali’s fight-worn gloves from 1972 bout vs. Floyd Patterson

•           Muhammad Ali’s c.1964 5th Street Gym training-worn robe

•           Muhammad Ali’s Everlast white satin fight-worn robe

•           Angelo Dundee’s 1958 boxing trainer's license

•           Muhammad Ali’s 1963 boxing license

•           Muhammad Ali’s mouthpiece molds and fight-worn mouthpiece from last fight vs. Trevor Berbick

•           Sugar Ray Leonard’s fight-worn gloves from 1980 Leonard vs. Roberto Durán II (no más) bout

ROBERT GUERRERO RETURNS WITH IMPRESSIVE UNANIMOUS DECISION VICTORY OVER SELCUK AYDIN SATURDAY ON SHOWTIME®

Saturday’s SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® Telecast Will Replay
Tuesday, July 31 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME EXTREME®
Available On Demand from Sunday, July 29, through Aug. 26

SAN JOSE, Calif., (July 28, 2012)Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero won the World Boxing Council (WBC) Interim Welterweight World Championship with a unanimous decision victory over previously undefeated Selcuk Aydin in front of a hometown crowd on Saturday in the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING main event  at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

Guerrero, who was moving up two weight classes after a 15-month layoff, was the more active boxer despite admitting having to shake off some rust in his return to the ring.  The Gilroy , Calif. , native threw and landed more punches while showcasing a surprising display of power and aggressiveness in an impressive debut in his new division.

“He’s a strong guy,” Guerrero said.  “I want to take on the best and that’s why we challenged him.  It’s my first fight back in a year and I took care of business.

“I believe in my talents and my skills.  I stood with him a little too long, but I’m a fighter. Now you know I can take a shot at the welterweight division.  Floyd Mayweather, you want this belt, its right here.  Come and get it. “

Guerrero (30-1-1, 18 KO’s) built an early lead over the Turkish Aydin (23-1, 17 KO’s), who rallied with his powerful right hand in the middle and later rounds, but Guerrero, who fought with a second wind in the championship rounds, had built a steady lead and won by scores of 117-11 and 116-112 (twice).

“I think I did wrong, not the judges,” Aydin said.  “I could not do what I wanted to do.  It’s my mistake, I blame it on me.  After the fourth round something happened with me.  I saw double and I don’t know why, but there’s no excuse - I lost.”

SHOWTIME boxing analyst and Hall of Famer Al Bernstein was impressed with Guerrero’s performance.

“It was fairly remarkable that Guerrero was able to move up two weight classes after a long layoff and win a battle of attrition with a true welterweight,” Bernstein said.  “Aydin is not a stylist and has technique issues, but he is a powerful puncher and he made this an exciting fight.”

In a fast-paced, exciting fight, Shawn Porter kicked off the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast with a hard-fought unanimous decision (96-94, 97-93, 98-92) victory over Alfonso Gomez in the 10-round welterweight co-feature.

The ShoBox: The New Generation alum proved too tough and durable for Gomez, who seemed unable to hurt Porter (20-0, 14 KO’s), of Cleveland , Ohio , with his best shots.  Porter, who landed 45 percent of his power punches compared to Gomez’s 34 percent, dominated the middle rounds with effective body shots and powerful combos as Gomez (23-6-2, 12 KO’s), of Guadalajara, Mexico, tired.

“He has a lot of heart,” Porter said.  “We came in here and we knew what to expect.  I’m an aggressive fighter, my team knows that.  If there’s anything I can change it’s that I come forward too much.

“I’m 20 and 0.  I can do 10 (rounds) with no problem.  I’m on my way up to 12.”

In SHOWTIME EXTREME action, Hugo Centeno (15-0, 8 KO’s), of Oxnard, Calif., kept his unbeaten record intact with a near-shutout eight-round unanimous decision victory (79-73, 80-72 twice) victory over Ayi Bruce (14-8, 8 KO’s), of Albany, N.Y.

Undefeated British super middleweight prospect George Groves (15-0, 12 KO’s) opened up the SHOWTIME EXTREME telecast with a bang with a brutal knockout at 2:15 of the sixth round over Francisco Sierra (24-6-1, 22 KO’s), of Tepic, Mexico.

The fights will air on replay on SHOWTIME EXTREME on Tuesday, July 31, at 10:30 p.m. ET / PT and will be available On Demand from Sunday, July 29 through Aug. 26.

Gus Johnson called the action on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING with Al Bernstein serving as expert analysts. Barry Tompkins and Steve Farhood announced the fights on SHOWTIME EXTREME. David Dinkins Jr. was the Executive Producer with Bob Dunphy directing.

Here’s what the participants had to say on Wednesday:

ROBERT GUERRERO:

“I had a great camp.  I’ll let my training talk in the ring.  I’ve been in Lake Tahoe for two months and I’m in great shape.  This is the best camp I’ve ever had.

“My wife is doing better now and I can focus on boxing.  Before, you guys only saw 50 percent of me in the ring.  Now, I can give it 100 percent.

“I’m hungry and ready to fight.

“I want to thank Aydin for taking on the challenge to face me.

“He said he was going to break my jaw and that motivated me more.  That pushed me even harder to get in there and bring it.

“I’m making my way back into the ring so this fight is very important for my career.  I’m 100 percent focused and I know what I need to do on Saturday.  If they think we’re looking past him, they’re wrong.”

SELCUK AYDIN:

“Most of the time when you have a big fight coming up you talk big, but I’m not a man of big words; I like to prove myself in the ring.

“I know what I came here for, to put on a great fight.  We know our opponent, we know he is tough, but we came here to win and take the title back to Turkey.

“I’ve been fighting for 20 years and I know what I have to do to win.  You’ll see on Saturday night.

“I can hit hard, but I will also box.  I can’t wait to prove to the United States fans what I can do in the ring.

“We know Robert is very experienced, so I won’t say anything against him, but I know what I’ve done.  I’ve had a great camp and I’m prepared for anything that happens on Saturday.  I know what I’m all about and you’ll find out soon enough.”

RUBEN GUERRERO (Guerrero’s father and trainer):

“We had a great camp up in Lake Tahoe.  We did it all with Bob Santos - conditioning, nutrition, training.  When Robert gets in the ring you’ll see that body.

“He’s ready, he’s on fire.  He’s ready for 20 or 30 rounds.

“These guys think they’re here to win but we’re going to put on a clinic.

“Robert is going to win another title.  It’s going to be a long ride home for these guys.”

CONNY MITTERMEIER (Aydin’s trainer):

“We’ve had most of our camp here in San Jose.  It’s been a great camp and Selcuk is in great shape.

“We have a very tough opponent, but Selcuk is here to win the fight.  We know we have a tough test in front of us but we came here to win.”

SHAWN PORTER:

“This is my first fight in California, which is saying a lot after my amateur and professional career, so it’s a big step for me and my camp.

“My camp dissected Alfonso and told me what to do in the ring.  My team pushes me physically and mentally to be ready to fight and I’m prepared to be 20 and 0 after Saturday night.

“He is the most experienced fighter I’ve faced as a professional and he’s been in there with some of the best, but I fought some tough guys in the amateurs and beat them.

“I need to use everything I have; speed, quickness, power, strength and endurance.  It’s going to take everything I have to beat him.  I need to make adjustments and take it one round at a time.”

ALFONSO GOMEZ:

“This is where I fought as an amateur and I’m excited to be back.

“We prepared well for this camp for Porter.  We know he is capable.  He reminds me of a young Shane Mosley and I’m sure he’ll have a great career like Mosley, but I have plans and he can’t derail me.

“I’m the toughest guy he’s ever faced.  It’s a tough test that I know he will fail.  I feel confident, strong and ready.”

Friday's ShoBox Results Release & Photos: Hovhannisyan, Morales Win

SANTA YNEZ, Calif. (July 21, 2012) - In a thrilling fight in the main event of an exciting doubleheader Friday on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME®, unbeaten Art Hovhannisyan (15-0, 8 KOs), of Glendale, Calif., turned back a determined bid by former World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champion Miguel Acosta (29-6-2, 23 KOs), of Caracas, Venezuela, to win a hard-fought 10-round split decision.

In the co-feature at Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif., talented, unbeaten super bantamweight Roman Morales (11-0, 6 KOs), of San Ardo, Calif., registered an impressive eight-round unanimous decision over Alexis Santiago (11-3-1 5 KOs), of Las Vegas, Nev.

Hovhannisyan, making his first start in 11 months, was victorious in a hard-hitting, fast-paced scrap by the scores of 95-93 twice and 92-96. Each slugger went down one time, Acosta late in the opening round, Hovhannisyan in the fifth.

"Both (blow-by-blow announcer) Barry (Tompkins) and I said that this was the kind of fight that you could make a case for for either guy,'' ShoBox expert analyst Steve Farhood said afterward. "It was a great, interesting fight. It could have ended early (after Hovhannisyan dropped Acosta with a sweeping overhand right hand with approximately 10 seconds to go in the first round). If the knockdown had come earlier in the round it might have since Acosta seemed like he was saved by the bell.

"But, ultimately, he wasn't saved by the judges.''

Hovhannisyan, 30, was a tad surprised at the scoring. "I knew it was a little close, but I definitely thought I won,'' he said. "After I dropped him, I kept trying for the spectacular knockout. My corner was telling me between rounds to calm down, but I thought I had him for sure. He was lucky the bell rang when it did.

"I'm very happy to get the win. Acosta can still fight. I think my conditioning played a great role in my performance, but at this level you need to be good in all facets. This fight was definitely a great learning experience for me.''

The more experienced Acosta, 34, who moved well throughout and decked Hovhannisyan with an overhand right hand, thought he'd done enough to get his hand raised. "I was very sure I won,'' he said. "Although he caught me in the first round I landed more punches throughout the fight. I knew my conditioning was good and it would carry me though the fight. I felt I was robbed.''

Among those rooting on Hovhannisyan was popular women's Mixed Martial Arts superstar, Ronda Rousey, who trains at the same Glendale gym as the boxer and has the same trainer, Edmond Tarverdyan.

"Fighting is a lot less nerve wracking that just sitting and watching,'' said Rousey, who was interviewed between fights and will be the subject of the latest "ALL ACCESS" on SHOWTIME before her next fight. "I'd much rather be the one in there. But I'm really happy for Art.''

"ALL ACCESS: Ronda Rousey'' premieres on Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT. Rousey defends her STRIKEFORCE bantamweight championship against Sarah Kaufman on Saturday, Aug. 18, on SHOWTIME.

Morales, 23, scored a knockdown in the third en route to winning by the scores of 80-71 twice and 79-72.  Going eight rounds for the first time in a career that began in February 2011, the switch-hitting Morales showed excellent poise and composure in his ShoBox debut, and appears to be a prospect to watch.

"I thought this was a good performance,'' he said. "I'm glad I could go eight hard rounds because that is what I expected. I got a little tired but I knew I had to keep working. I'll be back in the gym soon and I'll be ready to fight whoever my team wants me to.''

The Roger Mayweather-trained Santiago, 21, offered no excuses. "I thought it was a close fight, a tough fight. I got dropped but it was just a flash knockdown. I was never hurt. I felt good the whole time."

The Gary Shaw Productions doubleheader will re-air this week as follows:

MMA fans can look forward to watching the pride of Asian MMA, Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki, make his highly-anticipated ONE FC debut in Manila. Shinya Aoki (30-6) is the former DREAM Lightweight Champion and has beaten the likes of Tatsuya Kawajiri, Marcus Aurelio and Rich Clementi. He holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo which has earned him a reputation as one of the top submission specialists in the sport of MMA. Currently fighting out of Evolve MMA, the “Grandmaster of Flying Submissions” is looking forward to showcasing his skills to the Filipino fans when he debuts at ONE FC: Pride of a Nation.

Eduard “The Landslide” Folayang (11-2) is back in action at ONE FC: Pride of a Nation. The hero of the Philippines will represent his country once again on an international stage when he enters the ONE FC cage. Folayang is excited to prove why he is still one of the top fighters in the Welterweight division today.

Three other great fights are already lined up for this historic night of MMA action. The main event will pit the ever impressive DREAM Bantamweight Champion Bibiano Fernandes against CFC Australia Champion Gustavo Falciroli.

Fernandes has an 11-3 record with most of his fights finishing via TKO or submission and is ranked as one of the top five fighters globally in the Bantamweight division. Despite being feared for his explosive submission grappling, his last victory in DREAM against former WEC Bantamweight Champion Antonio Banuelos, ended by TKO in just 1:21 seconds of round one, proving to everyone that he was equally adept at ending fights with his fists. He is looking to make a memorable ONE FC debut when he squares off against the aggressive striker and submission wizard from Australia, Gustavo Falciroli (12-3).

Falciroli is the current CFC Australia Bantamweight Champion. He earned his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2003 and is currently on a two-fight win streak. His last ONE FC fight captivated fans across the MMA community with his impressive rear naked choke submission victory over Soo Chul Kim in just 1:12 seconds of round one. Falciroli will be facing the biggest test of his fight career when he steps up in class against top pound for pound Bantamweight king Fernandes.

In addition to the main event, MMA fans will also have the opportunity to see the ONE FC debut of Andrei “The Pit Bull” Arlovski and Jens “Lil Evil” Pulver. Arlovski will square off against Soa Palelei and Pulver takes on the pride of the Philippines Eric “The Natural” Kelly.

Fans can look forward to some serious action in the ONE FC heavyweight division when “The Pit Bull” arrives for the big show on 31 August. Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei “The Pit Bull” Arlovski (17-9) will step into the ONE FC cage for the first time with the determination and striking ability to get him back on top of the division he once ruled. Arlovski has gone toe-to-toe against some of the top heavyweight fighters in the world including the likes of Tim Sylvia, Fabrico Werdum and Fedor Emelianenko. Expect Arlovski to bring hard hitting action when he looks to continue his winning streak against Soa Palelei.

Two of the most skilled strikers in the ONE FC Lightweight division will battle it out in what is guaranteed to be a fast paced slug fest. Former UFC Lightweight Champion Jens Pulver will battle the pride of the Philippines Eric Kelly. In his first appearance in the ONE FC cage, Pulver will look to impress Asian MMA fans with a decisive victory over the rising star Kelly. Coming off an impressive unanimous decision victory over Bae Young Kwon at ONE FC: Destiny of Warriors, Kelly will do everything in his power to maintain his unbeaten fight record and turn Pulver’s dream debut into a nightmare. Pulver is Kelly’s toughest test so far but Kelly will have the advantage of home crowd support at the SMART ARANETA Coliseum.

Interview with Zachary "Kid Yamaka" Wohlman

 By Chris Strait

Zachary Wohlman adapts to his surroundings.  I'm not just speaking of his having the rare ability to train at the wild card gym even in the beginning of his pro career; sparring against some of the best, and learning from trainers Freddie Roach and Eric Brown.  I'm speaking of the very reason he began boxing in the first place.  Most boxers describe themselves nowadays as warriors, at least on these shores.  However, Zac Wolhman said he fell in love with "boxing, not fighting", and it is that which guides and facilitates his learning curve.  It was not always that way.  Writer Chris Strait sat down with "Kid Yamaka", as he prepares for his 4th pro fight next week, against Jose Martell of Arizona, in his own backyard of Hollywood, CA.
CS: Your nickname obviously makes you stand out, as there are not many Jewish boxers nowadays.  Where did that come from?

ZW: I actually didn't get bar-mitzvah-ed until a few years ago.  I came back to my faith later, and Kid Yamaka (yarmulke) was a nickname given to me in the gym.  You either pick your nickname or it picks you.  Mine definitely picked me, but the more people heard it, they were like, "hey, that's a really good nickname".

CS: How did you begin boxing?  And at what age?

ZW: I was 14, and I went to military school on the Texas/Mexican border.  I was nervous to be there, so I told them I was a boxer to gain respect.

CS: Did you know how to box?

ZW: I knew nothing! (laughs), I was so aggressive when they put me in there, to make up for the fact that I didn't know what I was doing.  Ironic, now that I am more of a pure boxer.

CS: Did your style come from necessity, sparring against guys like Amir Khan and Alfonso Gomez?

ZW: I always rise to the level of my opposition, so I learn a ton from them.  This is my last 4-rounder, and I am looking forward to going more rounds.  But I love boxing, not fighting, and that's what this sport is.

CS: Do you feel your style is better suited to longer fights?

ZW: Oh yeah, you're only getting started breaking a guy down in 4 rounds, and if you suffer a flash knockdown, you have to get up and dominate, just to win a one-point decision.  I train for longer fights.

CS: You were forced to fight fast a bit in your last fight.  Tell us about that experience... getting rocked slightly, and then having your opponent quit with a broken hand.

ZW: Well, I don't think he had a broken hand.  My pride/humility won't allow me to take credit for it, but I think he came at me hard, caught me behind the head with a looping shot, and when it didn't finish me, he found a soft spot to lay down in.

CS: What did you learn from that?

ZW: Well, first that I could take a shot - I was still standing, so that's good to know.  Second, that I should take my time.  I was feeling the KO pressure (his first two fights were decision wins), and I let that get to me.

CS: Did you know anything about him coming in?

ZW: No, I like to have tape, but that fight, I hadn't seen anything.

CS: So, you do like to study tapes of your opponent?

ZW: Yes, some fighters don't, but I would rather know they are good... I have no problem with that.  I don't mind them being good, so I'd rather know that then know nothing.  I don't want to get to a weigh-in and have that be the first time I see that the guy is a foot taller than me. (laughs)

CS: Being trained and managed well in the beginning of your career (by Freddie Roach and Steven Bash, respectively), you haven't had to take short notice fights.  Do you do training camps, or stay in gym constantly?
ZW: I'm pretty much always in the gym.  The only break I took was when i went to Italy with Paulie (Malignaggi).. and even then I was sparring with him.
CS: Is he someone you look up to?
ZW: He's like a big brother to me... he was there, helping me before my first pro fight.  I hadn't been out of the country before that Italy trip.  It was crazy being there as a professional boxer, too.  Only had 3 fights, and boxing's already taking me all over the world.

CS: Is Freddie your primary trainer, or is Eric Brown?

ZW: Freddie makes all the decisions, and he will be in my corner this fight.  He's the main guy, but I don't want to discredit all the work Eric does.  It's about 60/40.

CS: How do you see your development progressing?

ZW: It's step by step.  Let's get to 8-0, let's get on ESPN, and keep moving forward.  I might move down to 140.  My legs and movement are my strength.

CS: Where can people find out more about you?

ZW: At my website, you can get to my FB and twitter from there, too.  www.zacharywohlman.com
